Sears Home - Belmont Case Study
Originally published in the 1931 catalog, The Belmont is one of many home kits sold by Sears, Roebuck Co. from 1908 to 1942.
Sears sold roughly 75,000 kits, of nearly 400 different styles.
The kits were shipped via train car across the country, and included everything needed to construct the home.
Catering predominantly to the middle-class and WWI veterans, the homes could be built by just about anyone in roughly 90 days.
Sears kit homes widely popularized the idea of single-family living in lieu of more traditional multi-generation households, largely due to their accessibility to most all social classes.
Due to the material and manufacturing demands during WWII, Sears ultimately was forced to end the program.
The Transformation
The original front of the house is one of it's best features, so it was crucial to maintain the character while still providing a fresh, modern feel.
The brick and siding were painted, and new high performance windows installed, and a new cedar shake roof was added to replace the dated shingles.
The rear of the home contains the 2-story addition, clad in vertical batten siding and corner full height windows.
An ivy trellis creates an outdoor dining area that filters dappled sunlight through the vines in a mosaic of shadows.
The patio serves as a private enclave, framed by the buildings and leading to the pool - the perfect place to spend the day grilling with the family, or a relaxing evening to recharge.
Entering the foyer brings an inviting sense of warmth and brightness.
Moving into the living area, with it's oversized fireplace, comfy seating, and beautiful details, ideal for chilling with the family chatting about the day's events or watching some TV or a movie.
The expanded kitchen consists of grey marble countertops, stained oak cabinets, and ample storage.
Opening both to the living area and outdoor patio, it serves as the true heart of the home - suited for both Saturday-night entertaining and Sunday-morning breakfasts and flexible enough for everyday family dining.
In the newly added bathroom, the first thing you notice is the peaceful atmosphere, giving you the feel of a spa-like retreat to wash away the day's stress and worries.
